What if the Evil Queen stood trial for poisoning Snow White? Imagine if the Dark Knight’s brand of rough justice finally caught up with him.

Mock trials involving Batman, Snow White and the Evil Queen will be just one of many attractions at the Law Week 2013 Open Day on Saturday 18 May at the Brisbane Courts of Law precinct.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Jarrod Bleijie said the Open Day would not only be a fun day out for families, but provide an opportunity to learn more about our legal system.

“As well as the trials, there will be hypotheticals, displays by drug detection dogs and public tours of the courts and cells,” Mr Bleijie said.

“There will also be many family-friendly activities to keep visitors of all ages involved and entertained.

“This is a great opportunity to visit the new QEII Courts of Law and the Brisbane Magistrates Court to discover more about the inner workings of the judicial, legal and justice systems.

“An innovative ‘Find a JP’ mobile website and a new web campaign to help Queenslanders plan for important life events and choices will be launched at the Open Day.”

Law Week 2013 is a national event that aims to give people a clearer understanding of the range of justice services available to them.

More than 75 events and information sessions have been held state-wide this week including mock trials by university students in Mackay, Walks for Justice in Brisbane and Townsville, Public Trustee and QCAT information sessions and free legal advice.

The Brisbane Open Day showcases the national Law Week theme of Law and Justice in your Community and is supported by the Queensland Law Society, QUT Faculty of Law, the University of Queensland TC Beirne School of Law, Queensland Environmental Law Association and Legal Aid Queensland.

Other highlights include:

10:30am: What sentence would you hand down for an assault? A drug crime? Murder? Join a judge, lawyer, prosecutor, representative of victims of crime and a journalist as they take you behind the decisions you read each day. Moderated by Madonna King.

11:00am:  From forgotten colonial murders to the infamous Boggo Road jail to appalling crimes in our recent history - Queensland Law Society presents Brisbane's criminal history.
