Public to have its say on Gold Coast quarry project

The Queensland Coordinator-General has approved the release of the environmental impact statement (EIS) for the Gold Coast Quarry Project and is inviting the public to have its say.

Boral Resources (Qld) Pty Ltd proposes to establish the quarry on a site it owns, 500 metres from the Pacific Highway at Reedy Creek, Tallebudgera Valley.

Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jeff Seeney today acknowledged that the proposal was controversial.

“There has been a high level of public interest in this proposal and this is the opportunity for people to have their say by making submissions to the Coordinator-General on this project,” Mr Seeney said.

Coordinator-General Barry Broe said the project EIS responded to submissions received from the public during the draft terms of reference stage of the environmental assessment.

“Boral has indicated its existing West Burleigh quarry located on the other side of the highway to the Reedy Creek site will cease operations when its reserves are depleted, potentially between 2018 and 2020,” Mr Broe said.

“The ‘footprint’ of the quarry will comprise around 30 per cent of the total site—approximately 65 hectares—and will include vegetated buffer zones of between 250 and 600 metres.”

All submissions must be written and delivered to the Coordinator-General’s office by 5pm on Tuesday 11 June, 2013.
