North Queensland is set to benefit from a new gold, silver and copper mine officially opened today by Premier Campbell Newman.

Evolution’s $200 million Mt Carlton mine, in the Burdekin region south-east of Townsville, will provide 135 fulltime jobs during production and provide an economic boost to the state.

“The LNP has identified the resources sector as a key pillar of the Queensland economy and this mine demonstrates how resource developments can drive economic prosperity for our regions,” Mr Newman said.

“We are committed to cutting red tape, fast-tracking investment in the resources sector and maximising local business opportunities.

“Success stories like the Mt Carlton mine are why we can confidently ask resources companies to come and do business in Queensland.”

Natural Resources and Mines Minister and Member for Hinchinbrook, Andrew Cripps, congratulated Evolution on opening its fourth mine in Queensland and commended its plans to continue exploration in Queensland.

“The company already operates gold mines at Cracow, Mount Rawdon and Pajingo and has committed to investing another $28 million in further exploration in Queensland,” Mr Cripps said.

“Evolution produced its first concentrate at Mt Carlton in March 2013 and has secured off-take agreements with its Chinese customers worth more than $1 billion across its initial mine life of 12 years.

“As a North Queenslander I’m particularly pleased with the company’s commitment to local employment and businesses which will benefit towns such as Bowen, Ayr and Townsville.

“It’s our hope that Evolution’s commitment to further exploration will expand the life of this mine and their other projects in Queensland.”
