Minister for National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing
The Honourable Steve Dickson

Queensland’s flood damaged sporting and recreation clubs will receive a major boost in their recovery efforts with an extra $1.2 million in funding to help them get back on their feet, Sport and Recreation Minister Steve Dickson announced today.

Mr Dickson said the Sport and Recreation Disaster Recovery Program funding would be vital in assisting damaged clubs throughout the state to rebuild.

“This funding increase from $1 million to $2.2 million is testament to our desire to see Queensland's sporting and community clubs back up and running,” Mr Dickson said.

“Grassroots sport and recreation clubs are the backbone of local communities and with this injection of funding the Newman Government is ensuring they can recover as quickly as possible.

“The initial response to the program from affected communities was overwhelming, reflecting of the scale of destruction caused by heavy rains, wind and flooding following ex-Tropical Cyclone Oswald earlier this year.

“Thanks to our disaster funding, more than 70 clubs are already being assisted, however many more still need assistance.”

Mr Dickson said one-off funding grants would be available to clubs and organisations in National Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA) declared local government areas across Queensland.

“We’re working with damaged clubs all over Queensland to ensure everything in our power to assist is being provided,” he said.

“With winter sports seasons kicking off soon we need to see Queensland’s clubs fully operational as soon as possible.

"Sport and recreation clubs are a vital part of our local communities, particularly in smaller rural and regional areas which were among those hit hardest by the recent extreme weather.”

Application forms are available from Sport and Recreation Service Centres, at www.nprsr.qld.gov.au or by calling 1300 656 191 for assistance.

Projects that will best assist clubs in re-establishing sport and recreation activities will be prioritised for the remainder of the program.
