The Newman Government hopes the $600 million Great Keppel Island Resort (GKIR) project can finally move toward development after today’s Federal approval for it to proceed.

Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jeff Seeney said the state was pleased to see a timely decision from the Gillard Government on the GKIR proposal.

“A Federal decision within a week of state approvals is a welcome change,” Mr Seeney said.

“Too often we have to wait months for the Federal Labor Government to make a decision on major development projects in Queensland.

“As the Premier told Parliament today, the Federal delays are costing Queensland dearly, holding Queensland back.

“We are missing out on the jobs and wealth that delayed projects could provide.

Mr Seeney said the assessment and approvals process for the Great Keppel Island Resort highlighted the absurdity of parallel state and federal processes.

“This project has been mired in delays under Federal and State Labor Governments for seven years,” he said.

“The assessments done in Brisbane have been duplicated in Canberra.

“It is costly and time wasting for the private sector proponent and the public services at state and federal level.

“It is contrary to what Julia Gillard told the States last year. She said she wanted to end this unnecessary duplication, but has done nothing."
