Recovery funding for Queensland’s flood affected clubs

Flood damaged Queensland sporting clubs will be able to access a $1 million fund to help them get back on their feet, Sport and Recreation Minister Steve Dickson announced today.

Mr Dickson said the funding would be vital in assisting damaged sporting and community clubs throughout the state to rebuild.

“Queensland’s grassroots sporting and recreation clubs are the backbone of local communities and the Newman Government will ensure they can get back to business as soon as possible,” Mr Dickson said.

“A huge number of clubs were hit by the extreme weather brought about by ex-tropical Cyclone Oswald, and as the clean-up commences they will need all the support they can get.

“I’ll be working with clubs all over Queensland in the coming weeks to ensure our department is doing everything in its power to assist.”

Mr Dickson said clubs would be eligible for grants up to $25,000 under the Sport and Recreation Disaster Recovery Program to replace much needed equipment and repair clubhouses and grounds.

“It’s going to be a tough road to complete recovery, but with their local communities standing behind these clubs they’ll be able to return to normal activity,” he said.

Mr Dickson said he had recently toured some of the flood-affected regions across Queensland including Gympie and Bundaberg, and witnessed first-hand the devastation left behind.

“Already I’ve seen the determination and resilience that Queenslanders are known for, on display, with clean-up efforts by club members and volunteers now well underway.”

The one-off funding grants will be available to eligible flood-affected clubs and organisations in local government areas across Queensland.

Application forms are available from Sport and Recreation Service Centres, or by calling 1300 656 191 for assistance. Applications will remain open until Friday 10 May 2013.
