The Newman Government today launched the third round of its $495 million Royalties for the Regions program that delivers new and improved community infrastructure to those who live, work and invest in our resource regions.

Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jeff Seeney said under Round 3 regional councils outside South East Queensland will be able to apply for a share of $130 million in funding to support critical infrastructure projects.

“Ours is a government that provides for all Queenslanders – a government that understands the ongoing need to improve infrastructure and services in Queensland’s regions,” Mr Seeney said.

Royalties for the Regions is a vital program that returns a share of the royalties earned from resources projects in regional Queensland to the people and communities that support the mining sector.

“We ensured the program was in place from day one in government, and that commitment is now delivering - improving the liveability of resource communities and helping them to grow and thrive.”

Mr Seeney said the first two rounds of Royalties for the Regions funding injected a total of $153 million into 64 projects covering 28 local government areas.

“The last round of funding supported road upgrades from the far south west to the tip of Cape York, the building and upgrading of water supply and treatment facilities in eight communities and the provision of childcare centres in Barcaldine and Blackall,” he said.

“We have brought forward Round 3 to better align with councils’ budget cycles and councils have until 7 February 2014 to submit Expressions of Interest for proposed community infrastructure and road projects.

“This round of funding will also be an opportunity for three recently de-amalgamated councils Mareeba, Livingstone and the Douglas shire councils to apply.

“The 32 short-listed projects from Round two of Royalties for the Regions funding have now submitted their business cases and funding for the projects will be confirmed by the end of the year.”
