Boggo Road Gaol tours to continue

Brisbane’s iconic Boggo Road Gaol will remain open to the public for another 12 months under a deal struck by the Newman Government.

After being locked away for eight years by the former Labor Government, the Brisbane landmark was re-opened for public access last year with local historian and tour guide Jack Sim placed in charge on an interim basis.

Housing and Public Works Minister Tim Mander said following a full EOI process, Mr Sim had now been awarded a 12 month contract to manage the public spaces of the gaol and provide educational, cultural and commercial activities.  

“Jack has a proven track record when it comes to running a popular and successful operation here at Boggo Road Gaol, and it’s impossible not to be drawn in by his passion for Queensland’s history,” Mr Mander said. 

“In the past people were desperate to get out of Boggo Road Gaol, these days people are desperate to get in, which is a testament to the hard work Jack and his team have put in over the past year.”

Minister for Tourism Jann Stuckey said Boggo Road Gaol’s dark history made it an attractive destination for both local and international tourists. 

“More than 12,000 people have come through the doors over the past year, and I’m sure Jack’s authentic tours will build on that success in the year ahead.

“Tourism is one of the pillars of Queensland’s economy that we promised at the election to grow and under the Newman Government, I’m proud to say it’s flourishing right across the state.

“Recent statistics show Brisbane alone played host to some six million visitors in 2013 who spent more than $4.8 billion during their stay.”

Mr Sim said that he is pleased that he can continue to share his love of one of Brisbane’s most treasured historical sites.

“The key is to ensure the building remains relevant and accessible to all members of the community – this is just as important as protecting it for our future generations,” Mr Sim said.  

“One of our most popular attractions is our monthly historical tour of the gaol, which is done by a former ex Boggo Road Gaol Prison Officer and a former in-mate.

“We have many plans including the introduction of some new events – some early ideas are a Prison Film Night and a Crime Writers Convention.”
