The Newman Government has taken the next step towards delivery of the Commonwealth Games Village on the Gold Coast with the announcement of Grocon as the preferred developer.

Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning, Jeff Seeney said the government would now undertake further negotiations with Grocon, with the intent to finalise a development agreement by early 2014.

“This is the final phase in what has been a rigorous procurement process undertaken by Economic Development Queensland to identify the preferred developer for the Games Village,” Mr Seeney said.

“Once the development agreement has been entered into early next year, the master plan for the Commonwealth Games Village will be fully revealed to the community.

“The construction of the Village will be one of the most significant urban renewal projects ever undertaken on the Gold Coast and one of the most important for the Commonwealth Games.

“It will also provide a significant boost for the State’s economy, creating jobs and growing the construction industry, which was a key election promise for the Newman Government.”

Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games Jann Stuckey said today’s announcement was another significant step in the timely delivery of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

“The Games Village will provide accommodation and services to 6,500 athletes and team officials during the event,” Ms Stuckey said.

“This exciting project will provide a long lasting legacy to the Gold Coast.

“After the Games, the site will be transformed into a master planned, mixed-use community featuring the state-of-the-art Health and Knowledge Precinct.”

Today’s recommendation has been endorsed by the Commonwealth Games Infrastructure Authority which is chaired by Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation Chairman and includes senior representation from the City of Gold Coast, Department of Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and Commonwealth Games and the Department of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning.
