Coordinator General to assess Capricorn Resort

The public has been invited to have its say on the State’s environmental assessment of the proposed new Capricorn Integrated Resort near Yeppoon.
Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jeff Seeney said the Coordinator General Barry Broe had declared the $600 million project to be a “coordinated project” requiring an environmental impact statement (EIS).
“The Coordinator General has advised that, given the scope and potential impacts of the project, that he will coordinate a whole-of-government response to its assessment,” Mr Seeney said.
“He will release the draft terms of reference for an EIS and will seek submissions on this project from 14 December 2013 to 27 January 2014.
“The proponent, Iwasaki Sangyo Co, aims to construct a new 300-room, 5-star resort with fine dining and recreational facilities near its existing Mercure Capricorn Resort.
“The resort site will be located on 9,000 hectares of land owned by Iwasaki Sangyo Co, with plans to declare 4,000 hectares of that as a nature conservation area.
“Around 1,400 hectares of land will be used for the proposed integrated resort and other activities which will include: a residential community and village centre, a caravan park, a conservation precinct and an airstrip.
“A cattle property on up to 3,500 hectares will remain.
“If approved, the project could generate up to 19,000 construction jobs (with up to 8,500 on-site) over a 20-year development period and around 2,160 ongoing, operational jobs on-site.”
The draft terms of reference for the EIS would consider a range of key environmental impacts, particularly on sensitive areas such as Corio Bay and the Byfield National Park.
Member for Keppel Bruce Young welcomed the declaration of the Capricorn Integrated Resort as a coordinated project.
“The Iwasaki Group has had a long history of resort management in the region and have stood the test of time,” Mr Young said.
“I encourage all interested parties to download the relevant documents and have their say on this important tourism project.”
If approved, early works could commence in 2015 with the full development completed in 2035.
