JOINT STATEMENT
Premier
The Honourable Campbell Newman
Minister for Natural Resources and Mines
The Honourable Andrew Cripps
A
world first view of Queensland’s mining and resources sector is about to become
available with the Newman Government delivering the most accurate spatial data
and information online.
Premier
Campbell Newman launched the world-first Mines
Globe, an easy-to-use Google Earth-based application containing a goldmine
of information about the resources industry, one of the four pillars of the
Queensland economy.
“Never
before has Queensland or the world seen such detailed and comprehensive data in
one place, that is freely available to students and the general public,” Mr
Newman said.
“Unlike
the former Labor Government, the Newman Government has a clear view of what is
happening in the resource sector and we know that for the industry to grow and
contribute to Queensland’s economy in the future this information must be more
readily available.
“Landholders
and companies have often encountered red tape and roadblocks in trying to
source this valuable data.
“Now,
with this significant development everyone has access at the click of a mouse
to more than 60 layers of detailed information about the resources sector
throughout the state in all its elements; from coal and minerals, to petroleum
and gas, quarries and geothermal activity.
“We
promised at the election to build this industry and we also promised to be more
open and accountable and we are delivering.”
Mr Newman said Mines Globe would provide geophysical survey information and the
details of historical exploration permits.
“This
new Mines Globe shows the location of
all current exploration and production permits, mining areas and boundaries,
Key Resource Areas and infrastructure such as pipelines and facilities,” he
said.
“Through
this new online tool, we will market the modern Queensland resources sector to
the world.”
Minister
for Natural Resources and Mines Andrew Cripps said this is the first time all
this data had been collated on one site.
“This
is the easiest and most accessible mining information data ever delivered to
the public and it’s being made available at no cost,” Mr Cripps said.
“The
Mines Globe will open up a vast array
of data about the resources sector that will interest a broad range of people.
“It
will be a tremendous resource for property owners, community groups,
educational institutions, businesses, resource companies, investors and anyone
else interested in researching this important pillar of the Queensland
economy.”
Mines Globe was developed
by the Land and Spatial Information Unit of the Department of Natural Resources
and Mines.
