Newman Government supports victims of crime

Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie today announced $2 million in extra funding to support victims of crime across Queensland.

“The money will go to five support organisations across the state and will improve frontline services for victims of crime as well as provide new services, responses and outlets,” Mr Bleijie said.

“The five organisations selected all provide invaluable support for victims of violent crimes who have had to handle psychological, emotional and physical pain.

“Service providers have told us that there is an increased need for a range of services for victims of crime across Queensland.

“This additional $2 million will increase the capacity of these organisations to respond to the growing, emerging or developing needs of victims of violent crime in Queensland.

“This extra funding means more victims will benefit from the additional support services they offer.”

The five organisations that will share the funding are:

·         Court Network Incorporated will use its additional funding of more than $435,000 to establish a Victims Support Unit located in the Brisbane Magistrates court.

·         Living Well, which is part of Anglicare Southern Queensland, has been given just over $510,000 to increase counselling for men who are the victims of sexual assault.

·         Protect All Children Today Incorporated will put its $291,700 towards the expansion of the Child Witness Support Program for victims of crime aged 3 to 17.

·         Queensland Homicide Victim’s Support Group has been given $467,000 to expand support services for family and friends of victims of homicide in regional Queensland.

·         W.W.I.L.D. provides services to victims of crime with intellectual disabilities and will use its $295,100 grant to expand frontline services and provide specialised training for workers.

Mr Bleijie said the funding would commence this month.
