The Honourable Ros Bates

The Newman Government today announced major changes to the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF), with the award-winning event moving to a new delivery model in 2013.

Arts Minister Ros Bates said a report commissioned by Arts Queensland and Events Queensland outlined what was needed to ensure CIAF remains a success long into the future.

“CIAF is an important and exciting event that celebrates Indigenous culture and helps achieve our goal of bringing arts to all Queenslanders,” Ms Bates said.

“Arts Queensland has delivered CIAF since 2009, with a Cairns based team and many fantastic business and Government sponsors.

“However, the recommendation of the report was to move CIAF out of Arts Queensland, outlining new governance, business models and frequency.

“The new arrangement will increase CIAF’s ability to attract sponsorship and philanthropic funding, while giving the Far North the opportunity to take ownership of the event.”

2013 will be a transition year for CIAF, with planning already underway for a smaller scale event.

Minister Bates said the Newman Government is committed to promoting Queensland’s Indigenous arts and cultures and will work closely with partners to showcase the works of Indigenous artists.

“The Queensland Government will continue to support CIAF with funding of $1.568 million, to help it through the transition phase,” she said.

“I will also appoint an expert team to steer CIAF through its transition, working closely with Cairns Mayor Bob Manning, CIAF co-patron Henrietta Fourmile Marrie and local artists and organisations.

“CIAF already has fantastic support but I now invite industry, business people and arts lovers alike to throw their support behind it even further.”

Major partners include Skytrans, Ports North and the Accor Group.
