Cultural Centre strengthens Indigenous tourism on the Gold Coast

The opening of the Gold Coast’s first dedicated Aboriginal Tourism and Cultural Centre will give visitors the opportunity to learn about the region’s rich Indigenous history.

Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games Minister Jann Stuckey officially opened the Jellurgal Cultural Centre at Burleigh Heads today.

“The Gold Coast is world renowned for its beaches, fantastic events and theme parks but has so many other attractions and experiences to offer visitors," Ms Stuckey said.

“In 2010, Indigenous tourists spent almost $4 billion throughout the country and the Jellurgal Cultural Centre will play a pivotal role in ensuring the future of this niche market on the Gold Coast.

“Visitors to the centre will be able to meet with a traditional land owner, listen to dreamtime stories and learn about the creation of the mountain, Jellurgal, from which the centre’s name is derived.

“The centre will give many Indigenous people, families and communities a chance to share their way of life, discuss their culture and reinforce pride in their heritage.

“The Newman Government’s DestinationQ strategy identifies Indigenous tourism as a key niche market for development in Queensland and we are committed to supporting and growing this sector."

The Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre features displays, a library and café and will offer daily tours from Monday, 10 December.
