Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jeff Seeney has praised Bulloo Shire Council for completing almost 90 per cent of its flood reconstruction works.

Mr Seeney said many roads in and around the shire were vital to the region’s economy and tourism, given their links to the New South Wales and South Australian borders.

The floods in 2010 and January 2011 had a substantial impact on the district, with major connections cut due to lingering floodwaters and the rural road network suffering significant damage.

“Bulloo Shire Council responded quickly by prioritising the works to Hungerford, Innamincka, Cameron Corner and Bullo Downs Roads which means a faster recovery for community, businesses and the region’s significant cattle industry,” Mr Seeney said.

“To be nearing completion 20 months on is a massive achievement for the Council and no doubt welcomed by the community.”

Mr Seeney said in addition to works already completed, an additional $6 million in Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA) funding was recently approved by the Queensland Reconstruction Authority to further advance works at flood damaged sites across the region.

“The additional funding will complement the impressive work Council has already done and I look forward to seeing infrastructure in Bulloo Shire fully restored by mid-2013.”

Bulloo Shire Council Mayor John Ferguson said the restoration works to Cameron Corner and Hungerford Roads in particular were a top priority to ensure significant cattle numbers went to market and owners were not subjected to financial loss.

“Council recognises the significance of these roads for property owners, mining companies and the general public and we are committed to repairing them as quickly as possible,” Councillor Ferguson said.

“Restoring and maintaining our links between Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia are vital to our economic and tourism growth.”

The reconstruction program of works in Bulloo Shire will be complete in mid-2013, weather permitting.

Queensland’s reconstruction program is being delivered under the NDRRA program, a joint Federal (75%) and State (25%) Government initiative.

The $12 billion program of works to rebuild Queensland is progressing, with more than $5.9 billion of NDRRA reconstruction works already delivered and a further $3 billion plus underway.
