The Honourable Jeff Seeney

Acting Premier Jeff Seeney has congratulated Toowoomba Regional Council for reaching the halfway mark in its flood reconstruction program following the 2010-11 summer of natural disasters.

“Not only has Toowoomba banded together as a community after the terrible destruction, but they have forged ahead to deliver reconstruction results just 23 months on,” Mr Seeney said.

“The Toowoomba region has one of the largest flood recovery programs in Queensland.

“With more than 1,800 emergency repair sites and close to 1,100 reconstruction sites identified, this has by no means been a small scale project for the Toowoomba Regional Council. To be delivering value-for-money outcomes on top of meeting deadlines is an impressive achievement.”

Toowoomba Regional Council Infrastructure Committee chair Cr Carol Taylor said Council was hoping to deliver the remainder of the reconstruction works by mid-2013, weather permitting.

“While some of the more significant restoration repairs are now complete, there are still many smaller connection roads, culverts and other replacement works to complete before the Toowoomba region is fully operational again,” Councillor Taylor said.

“The rebuild of Dungannon Road, Grey Gums Drive and Gowrie Glencoe Road are just a few examples of Council delivering strong value-for-money outcomes for the community.”

Based on current estimates, when its reconstruction program is complete Council will have received more than $150 million in Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Assistance (NDRRA) funding.

This is in addition to funds provided by Council to ensure the Toowoomba region’s infrastructure is repaired with the future in mind.

Other Toowoomba reconstruction sites to commence in the new year include works on Griffiths Street sewer replacement, The Palms Road at Cooyar and the Yarraman Weir.

Queensland’s flood reconstruction is being delivered under the NDRRA program, a joint Federal (75%) and State (25%) government initiative.

The $12 billion state-wide program to rebuild Queensland is progressing, with $5.9 billion in works delivered and a further $3 billion more underway.
