The State Government is gifting a parcel of land adjoining the Kandanga War Memorial to the Gympie Regional Council for community use.

Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jeff Seeney said the timing of transfer of the title deed was fitting, with Remembrance Day being on Sunday (Nov 11).

“My department asked Gympie Regional Council to suggest several properties owned by the Coordinator-General that could be transferred back to the community and the block next to the war memorial in Main Street, Kandanga was identified,” Mr Seeney said.

“We’ve reconfigured the survey to provide a lot of 251 square metres that can be given to council and the community.

“My department is also in discussions with Gympie Regional Council about several other parcels of land which were bought by the previous government for the ill-fated Traveston Dam, which may now be transferred back to council for community use.

“Once these discussions are complete, we will focus on getting other blocks of land on to the open market."

Chair of the Mary Valley Advisory Group Gympie MP David Gibson said stabilising valley communities was part of the Government’s Economic Development Strategy to re-establish and plan for the future development of Kandanga and other townships.

“Community gathering places, such as the memorial and retail amenities are part of this,” Mr Gibson said.

“A number of properties have been identified within Kandanga as suitable for small business operations, and will be marketed and presented for sale to promote economic development within the township.

“Other town development and urban expansion opportunities will be determined as the strategy is progressed.”
