Business as usual at TAFE: Minister

Education, Training and Employment Minister John-Paul Langbroek has reassured prospective TAFE students that it’s business as usual at Queensland’s public vocational education and training provider.

Mr Langbroek said media reports about the independent Queensland Skills and Training Taskforce final report claiming wholesale closures of TAFE campuses were untrue.

“Our highest priority is to provide specialised training that gives students, both current and prospective, real career options,” Mr Langbroek said.

“Reports claiming wholesale closure of TAFE campuses are pre-emptive as the government has yet to respond to the report.

“We are working to improve the State’s training system and are firmly committed to balancing the needs of local communities with the Report’s recommendations.”

Mr Langbroek said prospective students considering their study options for next year should not be deterred by negative media reports.

“TAFE Queensland has offered quality training for 130 years and will continue to do so by responding to community needs,” he said.

Mr Langbroek said the Taskforce received 91 submissions and drew on a broad range of industry professionals to help form its recommendations.

“The Taskforce has worked hard to provide independent advice and recommendations that will assist in reforming and revamping the State’s vocational education and training sector,” he said.

“The Newman Government will now consider these recommendations to make informed decisions that will see TAFE Queensland align with the marketplace and help grow Queensland’s economy.

“We will respond to the Taskforce Report by the end of November.”

The report was part of the Newman Government’s Six Month Action Plan.
