Premier Campbell Newman and Racing Minister Steve Dickson today announced Kumbia Race Club (KRC) would receive a second race meeting next year as part of the Sustain Country Series.

Mr Newman said the additional meeting on June 1 was part of his Government’s commitment to rejuvenating country clubs, racing and their communities.

“We’re delivering an additional $4 million over four years to help rebuild country racing across Queensland,” Mr Newman said.

“Through our three country racing programs, the Showcase Country Series, Celebrate Country Series and Sustain Country Series, we’re providing a much needed boost to the industry, allowing clubs to attract stronger race fields and entice more patrons to the track.

“Country racing is the heart and soul of the industry and we are taking the steps needed to protect and reinvigorate these regional clubs.”

Mr Dickson said the Sustain Country Series meetings were strategically placed to support country communities, with a focus on community celebrations, the lifeblood of small towns.

“I am determined to build a sustainable future for Queensland country racing and these new regionally focused meeting programs form a big part of this commitment,” Mr Dickson said.

“This extra race meeting will provide a much needed boost to KRC, which embodies the very essence of grassroots racing and support for the local community.”

The announcement came as a suite of changes to racing laws was introduced to Parliament.

“These amendments will restore integrity and accountability in the industry,” he said.

“Rather than the top down structure the previous Labor Government had in place, the Newman Government is ushering in a new era of inclusiveness for all industry members.”

KRC President Brian Lenihan said his Club, which has traditionally only held races once a year on Melbourne Cup day, was delighted to be hosting a second meeting.

“We’re thrilled; it’s just a great reward for all the hard work volunteers put into maintaining this club and racecourse,” Mr Lenihan said.

“Even more so, it’s great for the local trainers and jockeys who are able to chase the prize money here locally without having to travel great distances.”
