Scenic Rim Regional Council’s flood restoration program is gathering momentum with more than $5.5 million in activity either underway or delivered.

Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney said the work formed part of Scenic Rim’s $52 million estimated total flood restoration program and showed work was kicking up a gear in one of Queensland’s most important food bowls.

“Scenic Rim is home to a strong farming and agricultural community, which relies on its road network to transport produce from the farm to market and I’m pleased to report flood restoration work in the region is hitting important construction milestones,” Mr Seeney said.

“In the past three months, Scenic Rim Regional Council has awarded six contracts for flood repair work in the region.

“The most recent $3.3 million contract, awarded to Doval Constructions, will restore flood-ravaged roads in a number of areas including Beechmont, Gleneagle, Tamborine, Boyland, Beaudesert and Bromelton.

“Now that these contracts have been awarded, I look forward to seeing activity continue at pace in the region.”

Scenic Rim Regional Council Mayor John Brent said Council faced a significant flood restoration repair job owing to the region’s extensive regional road network of more than 1,700 kilometres.

“Returning Scenic Rim’s roads back to their pre-flood standard remains one of Council’s single-biggest priorities,” Councillor Brent said.

“In fact we expect to complete around $25 million in flood restoration projects in the coming year (2012-13) with the other half of our NDRRA-funded program expected to be completed in 2014.

“Our progress to date signals our commitment to move on from the worst set of natural disasters in Queensland’s history.”

Queensland’s reconstruction program is being delivered under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements, a joint Federal (75%) and State (25%) government initiative.

The $12 billion program of works to rebuild Queensland is progressing, with more than $5.4 billion of NDRRA reconstruction works already delivered and a further $3 billion-plus underway.
