The Honourable Jeff Seeney

More than $872 million in flood and cyclone reconstruction work is underway in north and far north Queensland with millions more in the pipeline, Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney said today.

Mr Seeney announced the Queensland Reconstruction Authority’s approval of $18 million in funding for Cairns Regional Council to restore more than 150 local roads damaged by Cyclone Yasi and monsoonal flooding.

“Funded under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA), this money will allow Council to continue to make headway in rebuilding from the worst set of natural disasters in Queensland’s history,” he said.

“Cairns Regional Council has already completed more than $9 million in restoration work and the reconstruction momentum will continue in the region.

“What we are seeing on the ground here in Cairns is proof that our north and far north Queensland communities are well on the road to recovery.

“In fact, completed work in north and far north Queensland has now exceeded $800 million and this figure will continue to increase as works are completed ahead of the start of the wet season.”

Cairns Regional Council Mayor Bob Manning said Council was leading from the front with a strong focus on value-for-money and working collaboratively with neighbouring Councils.

“The Bloomfield River crossing at Wujal Wujal is a great example of how Cairns is working with neighbouring Councils to complete critical restoration works,” Councillor Manning said.

“By working alongside Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire Council and Cook Shire Council, we were able to get a temporary crossing up and running much more quickly than would have otherwise been possible.”

Queensland’s reconstruction program is being delivered under the NDRRA program, a joint Federal (75%) and State (25%) government initiative.

The $12 billion program of works to rebuild Queensland is making good progress, with more than $5.4 billion of NDRRA reconstruction works already delivered and a further $3 billion plus underway.
