Government dealing with domestic violence

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice
The Honourable Jarrod Bleijie

Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie has today officially launched the Domestic Violence Assistance Support Services (DVASS) at the Holland Park Magistrates Court.

Mr Bleijie said the DVASS program had been developed between government and community organisations to support families dealing with domestic violence.

“Unlike other services offered through the court system, the DVASS program will provide access to legal advice and support for both men and women,” Mr Bleijie said.

“These situations are extremely difficult for the mothers, fathers and children involved and the DVASS program will work to find a resolution as quickly as possible.

“Although the focus of the program will be promoting the protection of women, it recognises the benefits in providing more assistance and advocacy options for men.

“The key reason for this is to make sure that both sides understand the court process and are represented at negotiations.

“This protects families from drawn-out court processes, which add further frustration and stress to an already emotional situation.”

Mr Bleijie said the program has been operating since June this year and as a result the court has seen more successful negotiations because both parties have legal representation.

“The Government is committed to helping people dealing with domestic violence by giving them access to legal advice, counselling and social support networks,” he said.

“I would like to thank the staff and the registrar of the Holland Park Magistrates Court for their hard work and determination in getting this important program up and running.”

The DVASS program will be trialled for 12 months at the Holland Park Magistrates Court with the view that it will be rolled out across other courts in the future.
