The Honourable Jarrod Bleijie

Bremer Park's Capral Limited and Origin Alliance, which delivered the Ipswich Motorway upgrade, are both finalists in this year's Queensland Safe Work Awards.

The awards celebrate innovation and commitment to workplace health and safety.

Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie announced the finalists today and commended the organisations for taking the lead in designing and building a better safety culture across Queensland.

“Following a serious incident in 2006, Capral began to improve its health and safety management system,” Mr Bleijie said.

“This change was led by senior management who were determined to make a difference and reverse the accident trend.

“In 2011, Capral Bremer Park was awarded safety accreditation and since then its systems have evolved, resulting in a decrease in lost time injuries from 10 in 2006 to zero in 2012.”

Origin Alliance's Ipswich Motorway upgrade project involved 1,200 people and 8.25 million working hours across six organisations.

“Origin Alliance created a safety management system and this enabled it to deliver the project six months early, 10 per cent under budget and with no major incidents.

“The safety management system succeeded through on-site challenges including 90,000 vehicles per day, three abandoned coal mines, the demolishment of 13 bridges and the January 2011 floods.

"Along the way, Origin Alliance has introduced a range of innovative safety procedures and approaches that will change the infrastructure construction industry.”

The awards are run by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland and the Electrical Safety Office.

Winners will be announced on 23 October.
