The Honourable Jarrod Bleijie

Six workplace deaths in Central Queensland* have prompted a call for local businesses to get involved in Safe Work Week this month (21-27 October).

Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie said Safe Work Week was a national initiative promoting safe workplaces and the health and well-being of employees.

“This year's theme ‘What’s your most important reason?’ asks employers and staff to consider the consequences of a workplace incident,” Mr Bleijie said.

“Safe Work Week 2012 is about reminding everyone of the good things they have waiting for them at home at the end of the working day.

“We want Queensland workplaces to be among the world’s safest and it is critical for businesses to promote safe practises and spread the message.

“Figures show approximately 25 Queenslanders die each year as a result of traumatic workplace incidents and more than 5,000 suffer a permanent injury.

“These deaths and injuries carry with them a devastating and personal impact on workers and their families, as well as a huge financial cost to the community.

“Educating businesses in the Central Queensland region about workplace health and safety is vital to reducing the injury and fatality toll.”

State of Origin coach and rugby league great Mal Meninga is the Safe Work Week Ambassador and will address a forum in Mackay on October 17.

“Mal lost his father to a workplace incident so is personally invested in this cause,” Mr Bleijie said.

“It is great to have Mal on board to support Safe Work Week by hosting motivational sessions and delivering the keynote address at the forums.

Mr Bleijie said although Safe Work Week officially runs from 21 to 27 October events were happening across Queensland all month.

“Businesses can hold their own workplace events to promote the safety message and there are a number of free resources available on-line to provide ideas and assistance,” he said.
